July 2017

It’s amazing how much can change in a month! At the beginning of the month Cordelia was finishing up zoo camp and flying up to San Jose with Grandparents Powers. We celebrated 4th of July up north and then Alicia and the kids flew down to Carlsbad. At the end of the month Alicia is starting her 4th week on the job. Grandma is helping watch the kids during the day and we got a nanny, Emilia, to watch the kids in the mornings. Tim is still up in San Jose. He handled managing the movers and is finishing up his on-site work at K-T over the next two weeks.

Cordelia had a great time at zoo camp and visiting with Grandparents. She is adjusting well to the move. She enjoys playing with Max (dog) and is getting lots of good grandparent time. She also went to a summer pre-school for three weeks and had a very fun time. So we’re going to enroll her for the fall, starting last week of August. She’s doing lots of fun things at pre-school and often is singing the songs in the afternoon. Separation from Daddy has been hard and she’s been very sad each time he left to go back to San Jose.

Anthony is talking up a storm and is very active. It’s hard to keep up with him, especially in the larger house where he can wonder off. He can be fun but also challenging. He’s is fully entering the stage of boundary pushing and we’re struggling with how to discipline him. Most of the time when Alicia tries to discipline he thinks it’s a game. So we need to work on the best way to instruct him in what is allowed and not allowed. He loves playing in the water and enjoys playing with cars. He also really loves reading books and right now he’s into pop-up books.

Both of the kids enjoy their new nanny, Emilia, and they are getting to do lots of fun activities during the week. Carlsbad library has lots of fun toddler events and the kids have also had park days and beach days with Emilia and Grandma. We’re still trying to find new playmates for them, hopefully we’ll make some connections soon.

Alicia has been adjusting to the new job and trying to navigate both the technical and cultural content of the company. The position seems like a good fit for Alicia and has lots of good potential for growth and expansion of her skills. The commute is a little long, typically 45min each way.  Alicia is managing her schedule so that she’s home for dinner with the kids. It’s certainly different working away from the kids during the day and coming back in the evenings. Things are still in transition and everyone is adjusting to all the changes but overall the situation is positive.

Tim has been dealing with the brunt of the changes this month. Having long periods of separation from the family and being responsible for all of the โ€œclean-upโ€ to support the move. He had to coordinate with movers, cleaners, and landlord; along with getting rid of all the excess furniture we aren’t moving. He’s had lots of discussions with his boss and others at K-T to determine what his role will be for remote work. At the same time he’s still a candidate for a position at Alicia’s company and will be coming down the first week of Aug to give a presentation. With all these changes and transitions, it’s been difficult for Tim to envision what life over the next few months will look like and what type of job going forward would be best for him.

Across the distance Tim and Alicia have been doing a fairly good job of staying connected, trying to maintain some level of consistency and frequent communication. Tim also came down to visit the last two weeks of July so we got to enjoy some quality family and couple time.

This final weekend the movers deposited all of our belongings at the house in Carlsbad. So we have stacks of boxes scattered throughout the house. Now begins the next process of unloading and organizing as we settle into our new living arrangement.

Pray for wisdom, especially for Tim with the upcoming job interview and job situation. Pray that God would make it clear where He wants Tim to work at going forward. Pray that as we complete our last two weeks of separation, that we will continue to make the effort to stay connected. Pray for efficiency and safety in all the unpacking and furniture relocating. We will be uniting for a Powers family trip to the eastern sierras in August, pray for safe travels and a good family time. Thank you for all your prayers and support during this transition time.
